Usage Check Worksheet

Usage Check

Students read scenarios and decide if it’s appropriate to use an ampersand, circling YES or NO for each. The statements cover a variety of writing contexts, from informal to formal, creative to technical. This encourages critical thinking about how and when symbols fit stylistically. Students learn that ampersands are not universal substitutes for “and.”

This exercise builds editing judgment and audience awareness. It strengthens understanding of writing tone and purpose. Students gain insight into proper formatting conventions. Decision-making based on language context improves critical literacy skills.
