Identifying Consonance in Phrases
This worksheet asks your child to look at pairs of phrases and choose which one contains consonance. It’s a nice step up in difficulty because they’re no longer being told exactly where to look-they have to compare and decide. This helps sharpen their attention to sound patterns in a more active way. It also reinforces the idea that consonance can appear in different parts of words, not just at the beginning.
As your child works through each pair, they begin to listen more closely to how the words sound together. They may read the phrases out loud to hear the repeated consonant sounds, which is exactly what you want to see. This kind of practice builds stronger listening and reading connections. Over time, they become quicker at spotting these patterns without needing as much support. It also helps them feel more confident when identifying literary devices on their own.
